Every converting line runs on cores, yet core selection rarely gets the engineering attention it deserves. The wrong inside diameter stalls a slitting operation. A wall that’s too light buckles under winding tension. A length that’s off by a fraction triggers reject after reject at the mandrel. Tape and label cores are precision components, not commodity cardboard tubes — and specifying them correctly from the start saves real money on the floor.

Tape Core Sizes: Understanding Inside Diameter

Inside diameter is the dimension that locks your core to a mandrel or chuck, so it’s the first number to nail down. NHPT’s tape and label cores are manufactured across a standard range of 1″ to 8″ ID, with custom mandrel tooling available for sizes outside that window.

Tape converters most commonly run on 1″, 3″, and 6″ cores. The 3-inch core is by far the most prevalent in pressure-sensitive tape and narrow-web label converting — it fits the majority of slitters, rewinders, and tension-controlled accumulators in use today. The 1″ core shows up in smaller-format tape rolls and specialty packaging. The 6″ core handles heavier-gauge films and wide-format label stock where a larger winding diameter is necessary to maintain roll stability.

If your operation runs non-standard equipment or you’re sourcing cores for a proprietary winding system, custom IDs are available. The critical spec to communicate is your mandrel diameter, not a nominal size — real-world mandrels vary, and a core that slips or binds costs you more than the cores themselves.

Wall Thickness and Crush Strength

Wall thickness on tape and label cores commonly runs in the range of roughly .060″ to .125″, which suits the winding tension and roll weights typical of tape and label applications. That said, wall is always specified relative to crush requirement, not chosen from a standard menu.

The ply count and paper grade are then selected to meet that requirement. A 3-inch label core for lightweight film stock doesn’t need the same wall as a 3-inch core carrying a heavy industrial tape — and over-engineering wall thickness adds cost without adding value. Crush performance is engineered and confirmed on your spec or quote.

When reviewing a core spec, ask your supplier for the flat-crush value at the specified wall and ID, not just the wall measurement. Two cores with identical walls but different paperboard grades can perform very differently under winding tension.

Length, Cut Quality, and Tolerances

Tape and label cores run in finished lengths from .25″ to 300″, precision-cut to your specification. At the short end, that covers narrow-slit finished rolls. At the long end, it covers jumbo parent rolls and traverse-wound spools.

Cut quality matters more than most buyers document in their spec sheets. Ragged or out-of-square ends cause lateral run-out on winding equipment, create gaps in butt-spliced core sets, and leave visible defects at roll edges that trigger downstream complaints. Clean, square cuts — held consistently across millions of cores per month — are what separate a precision core supplier from a general tube shop.

For label and tape converter applications, consistent length from core to core matters as much as dimensional accuracy. A mixed-length batch on a multi-spindle slitter creates winding mismatches that waste film and operator time.
